The dangers of using AI in simultaneous interpretation: why neutrality matters

Technology has advanced by leaps and bounds, and with it, artificial intelligence (AI) systems have become increasingly integrated into various areas of communication, including simultaneous interpretation. While AI can be useful in certain contexts, its application in real-time interpretation raises several risks that should not be overlooked, especially when it comes to maintaining neutrality in the information being conveyed.

The main risk: lack of neutrality

In human interpretation, the primary goal of the interpreter is to convey the message impartially, respecting the speaker’s original intent. Professional interpreters, as experts in different languages and cultures, ensure that communication is clear and true to the message. In contrast, AI systems cannot guarantee a completely neutral translation. Why? Because AI is influenced by the technological decisions, algorithms, and guidelines of those who develop it.

These algorithms often reflect the ideologies, values, and political or economic influences of the entities funding their creation. Governments and large corporations have specific interests that, although not always obvious, can skew the interpretation of information. Sometimes, these influences are unintentional, but they can alter the way certain messages are conveyed, favouring specific perspectives over others.

Interpretation as a bridge between cultures

Simultaneous interpretation is not just about translating words; it goes much deeper: it is a bridge between cultures, a tool that not only allows people to understand what is said but also the emotional, cultural, and historical context behind the words. Human interpreters are able to grasp the cultural essence of the message, adapting it to the situation and the audience they are working with. This contextual knowledge is vital to ensure the message is not lost in translation.

AI, no matter how advanced, does not possess the ability to perceive cultural nuances, nor can it make adaptations when the context requires it to do so. It cannot interpret or convey emotions adequately, nor can it adjust to sudden changes that occur in a live conversation. For this reason, AI is limited when faced with complex situations that demand a deep understanding of culture and social dynamics.

Risks in critical moments

One of the most dangerous scenarios of using AI in simultaneous interpretation arises when it is used in high-tension situations or in moments of crucial decision-making. If an interpretation goes wrong, the consequences could be far more severe than in other contexts. A small translation error, a technical glitch, or even unintentional AI bias could completely change the perception of an event, influence political or economic decisions, or even generate international conflicts. Can we really afford to rely on technology in these delicate cases?

Simultaneous interpretation in critical situations, such as international negotiations or high-level statements, demands absolute precision, as any error could have unforeseen consequences. Can we trust a machine that lacks the knowledge or human sensitivity to handle such delicate moments?

In summary: AI as a complement, not a substitute

While artificial intelligence can be a useful tool in certain scenarios, it should not replace human interpreters in situations that require impartiality, cultural precision, and absolute neutrality. AI can assist with repetitive tasks or informal translations, but in key moments of intercultural communication, human interpretation remains essential.

Technology should be viewed as a complement, a tool that assists the interpreter, but it should never replace the judgement, ethics, and cultural sensitivity that a human interpreter provides. In a globalised world, where words and messages cross borders quickly, neutrality in interpretation is key to ensuring that information is not distorted and that messages remain true to their original intent.
